Silver Coin Discovery in Huizhou with Medical GPR Technology
On September 30, 2024, archaeologists and researchers at the Institute of Science and Technology (IST) at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) made an exciting discovery in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, using advanced Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology designed for medical imaging. This breakthrough application highlights a new method that could redefine how we uncover ancient treasures and study them non-invasively.
The team led by Dr. Li Wei successfully detected an ancient Silver Coin hidden beneath the earth’s surface without causing any disruption to the archaeological site. The use of this sophisticated radar system, which originally was developed for imaging inside the human body, provided precise and detailed images that allowed for accurate location and extraction of the coin.
The coin, estimated to be over a thousand years old, provides invaluable insight into the historical trade and economic activities of ancient Huizhou. "This is a significant find not only for archaeologists but also for historians and enthusiasts who are passionate about exploring our past," said Dr. Li. "The fact that we can use modern medical technologies like this is truly remarkable."
